Recently I came across an exceptional biblical documentary, produced by PBS Boston for NOVA. The documentary examines the development and composition of the Torah, the history of Israel and Judah, and intersections with science and archaeology. The production values are outstanding; the commentary superb; the experts second-to-none; the artwork beautiful; the reconstructions vivid and accurate; and, the content impeccable. Although as any scholar is likely to do, I could quibble here and there on points made in the film. For example, I thought more attention could have been given to earlier manifestations of monotheism, the Transjordan to Cisjordan migration in the late second millennium, and the evidence for early material in P. It is by-and-large though an accurate introduction to academic biblical studies and the history of the Bible. The film raises complex issues, such as carbon dating and ceramic typology, with ease and nuance! The experts featured in this film include Penn State's own Donald Redford, Harvard's Lawrence Stager and Peter Machinist, Israel Finkelstein, Amihai Mazar, Ron Tappy, Kyle McCarter, Eilat Mazar, David Ilan, Avraham Biran, Sharon Zuckerman, Amnon Ben-Tor, Bill Dever, Jodi Magness, and many others. This is a truly exceptional documentary that easily takes its place as the best documentary on the Bible ever produced!
The Bible's Buried Secrets: Beyond Fact or Fiction Written, Produced, and Directed by Gary Glassman
Filmed on location throughout the Middle East, the film transports viewers into the world of the Old Testament through guided explorations of ancient ruins and advanced digital animation techniques, which bring sacred places, including the long-lost Temple of Solomon, to life. As part of the project, NOVA commissioned a hand-crafted, illustrated Bibleāa bound collection of artwork featuring images of ancient frescoes, illuminated medieval manuscripts, and paintings by European masters. These striking visuals evoke memorable scenes from biblical literature, such as God speaking to Moses from the burning bush and David as he slays the giant Philistine warrior, Goliath. According to Apsell, "In addition to exploring the historical authenticity of the biblical narrative, this powerful intersection of science, scholarship, and scripture also provides a unique insight into the deeper meaning of biblical texts and their continuing resonance through the centuries." I encourage you to buy this documentary on the Bible and also to visit the companion website.Labels: archaeology, biblical studies, film, reviews |
